Jerry Falwell was born in 1933 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He lived with his mom and dad. Falwell did not grow up in a very religious family, “His grandfather was an adamant atheist; his father, a cynical agnostic who hated preachers and ran a moonshine operation during Prohibition. His mother, however, was a devout Christian who fervently prayed for her family” (Harris).
Before he became a pastor he was going to play baseball at Lynchburg College, but he decided that he wanted to transfer and attended Baptist Bible College. While he was there he studied to become a preacher. This foreshadows him creating Liberty University, Lynchburg Christian Academy, and Thomas Road Baptist Church due to how much he loved religion. Falwell was very big into helping people become a Christian and he created many ways to help people with that by creating a church, a television and radio station, a school that went from Kindergarten to 12th grade, and then also a college. In 1956, Falwell created Thomas Road Baptist Church. When he created the church he only had about 30 members. In 1956, Falwell also created a radio and television station called “Old Time Gospel Hour” it was trying to get people to convert or start believing in Christianity. Falwell also wanted kids to start believing so he created a school in Lynchburg that went from Kindergarten to 12th grade which is Lynchburg Christian Academy this was created in 1967. Then in 1971, he created Liberty University which is a college in Lynchburg, Virginia and has a very strong religious base. In 1985 he made a goal to have at least 50,000 students that attended Liberty University. As of recently, his goal has been more than reached. Library has around 109,000 students that are apart of the school. Around 15,000 of the students take classes on the campus and then the other 94,000 takes online classes that the school provides.
