In the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, Jim Hawkins's life completely took a turn when finding the treasure map. The finding of the map was the inciting incident of the story and allowed Jim Hawkins to go on his voyage with his crew. Jim went from being a timorous young man to a resolute and persevering young man who went on a dangerous adventure to find treasure. When Jim meets with the doctor and the squire, he says “That was all; but brief as it was, and, to me, incomprehensible, it filled the squire and Dr. Livesey with delight” (Stevenson 47). Their reactions helped spark Jim Hawkins into going on the adventure and made him more determined to find the treasure after they say “We’ll have favorable winds, a quick passage, and not the least difficulty in finding the spot, and money to eat - to roll in - to play duck and drake with ever after” (47). Jim Hawkins heard very important information about Long John Silver and what he said to the crew. If he didn’t hear it, Jim would not know of Long John Silver's past and wouldn’t be prepared for what Long John Silver would do. Jim says “I think, if I had been able, that I would have killed him through the barrel” (73). This experience affected Jim Hawkin’s entire impression of Long John Silver. If he did not hear that, Jim would most likely have been caught by surprise when he found that he was trying to steal the treasure with the mutineers and would not be prepared to tell the crew or
