Overview
The Peloponnesian War lasted nearly 30 years. Imperialistic Sparta and Athens were fighting over land and the fear of being overtaken by one another.
As a result, the countries had an increase in poverty, and with most of the men away women took up nontraditional roles to make ends meet

The Peloponnesian War influenced much of Aristophanes works and Lysistrata was no exception. The roles of women changed out of necessity as Aristophanes criticism of the war grew. This shift in the roles of women is evident in his works.
