Stokely Carmichael began the Black Power Movement with his efforts in Lowndes County, Alabama. It was this initial effort that I believe caused for “Black Power” to become a national phenomenon. By becoming a national phenomenon, it inspired most organizations that came after. Many of the programs that came after also followed similar guidelines as Black Power. Shortly after Carmichael's time in Alabama, he began to travel the nation spreading the motive of Black Power and how Black Americans should go about achieving this Power. His death in 1965 prevents me from giving him the credit. Malcolm’s Black Nationalist approach was important to the ideology of the movement, but activist such as Stokely, Huey, and Bobby took these ideas and moved forward. The Black Power Movement took on a different image depending on the location and what problems were occurring in each region of America, but what was common throughout the Nation was Black People’s desire to create an institution that no longer targeted their race.
In the 60’s Black People were motivated to establish a sense of culture efforts to reclaim ones blackness and gain power. This was a unique approach to the incite change within the system. At this moment Black Americans began to embrace their roots, natural features, and skin. This was known as the Black Awakening. The Awakening occurred during the same time as the Black Power Movement. I believe this caused for: Black Power, Black Culture, and Low-income Culture to become viewed as similar entities. This cultural appeal encouraged the nation to want to be a part of the Movement. By
