Robert “Bob” Fosse was a man of many talents, skills, and before passing on in 1987; made a tremendous impact on dance, especially the mixing of dance styles for other choreographers to come. The performances he created for Broadway along with his reach in the movie industry formed a “Fosse” image that others hoped to reach on their journey through the dance industry. Florence Mills made an impact on the nation during the Jazz Age because of the passion she had for her art. Florence was an amazing singer, dancer, and a leading performer during this age. Florence is recognized as an icon for African Americans everywhere because of her passion that never died. Florence started following her dreams at a very young age. “Under the name “Baby Florence”, she made her stage debut at about age five” (Britannica).
Not only did she inspire the masses through this artistic revolution, she also paved the way for pioneers of dance such as, Fokine, Diaghilev, and the Ballet Russes. Successful artists such as Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham were also supported and inspired by Fuller, sponsoring them in their independent concerts helping them get started in their career as artists. Fuller continued to popularize this foreign art form by establishing her own dance school in the early 1900’s, forwarding her incredibly personal style of movement to her dancers. The power of jazz dance would have never influence so many people today with the famous American dancer, Jack Cole. Jack Cole was mainly known as the “Father of Jazz Dance” and had a unique style of movement that he portrayed in a variety of commercial setting. Jack Cole was not only known as a mentor to many dancers throughout the world but also as an innovator of dance movement and a filmmaker who connected the relationship of the camera and dance together. Jack Cole was given the name of “The Father of Dance” because he has created a genre of dance that has a mixture of modern, ethnic, ballet into a movement language as we know as theatrical jazz dance. Without Cole’s inspiration jazz dance would have never been born.
Martha Graham was a world famous modern dancer and choreographer from the twentieth century. Graham was special to any other dancer in her time, she created her very own unique difficult technique style which changed the dance community's perspective on modern dance. Graham choreographed her works through themes and ideas that were quite personal and related to issues in her time. The technique style Graham created was a whole new language in dance. She developed the motion of ‘contraction and release’ which was based on the concept of breathing.
One appealing quality of modern dance to African American dancers is that the dancers moved by understanding the techniques and their philosophies, instead of recognizing terms. There are traditionalists and expermentialists who would try to understand techniques and try to branch off to their own individual style of dance. This quality is not only technique, it is also symbolic and expressive. Katherine Dunham had her "Dunham techniques", in which other dancers would try to use to their choreographies. Martha Graham, a European-American dancer, adapted techniques which involves her philosophy of movement inside the womb.
Graham. The world of modern dance was started by the one and only, Martha Graham. On May 11th 1894, Martha Graham was born to George Graham and Jane Beers in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, now known as Pittsburg. Her father, George, was a doctor that specializes in treating people with nervous disorders.

For those willing to befriend effort and hard work, great treasures are in store, but only those very few who push towards success will earn them. As a ballet dancer at age nine, I knew not of the hard work which lay ahead, for my heart was set on my treasure. After watching a company class early that Saturday morning, watching the luminous dancers show off their lines and glide across the floor on their toes, I knew what my mind desired. I wanted to be just like them; I craved the ability to dance en pointe. Being en pointe takes many months of preparation, blisters, calluses, and sweat, but nothing was going to pull me away from my treasure.
There, we complete drill after drill after drill to perfect technique. We practice all of our dances multiple times, and at the end, we drill all of our jumps, spins, and turns. Classes last hours, all with little time to rest in between dances. This is to build stamina. Dancers are required to keep the appearance of energy up on stage, so that they can complete the dance well without seeming tired.
Education can aid in how I can use my knowledge to delve deeper into the dance world and aid in storytelling from the stage. As I continue to dance with ABT, I find myself eager and impatient to continue expanding my world beyond the confines of dance and beyond the boundaries of what I have excelled in all my life. I am tasked with examining more closely what I can do beyond the narrow lens of ballet. Literature, culture, and tradition are all enmeshed with dance. Ballet like the rest of the world, is having to take a step back to reexamine the stories we are telling and who's voice it comes from.
A hunger and desire to dance compels people to work with, watch, and learn from that dancer. I have been a dancer for over ten years now; I can attest to how far passion can carry a dancer. As a dancer, I learn everything in steps: there are a plethora of movements and acrobatics that could not possibly be learned simply by watching them one time. After mastering the steps, I always ask myself what I could give to the movement to make it my own. My passion for dance has always compelled me to continually give more of myself than what is expected.
