Martha Graham is known as the mother of modern dance. Her impact on dance was often compared to that of Picasso’s on painting, Stravinsky’s on music, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s on architecture. She opened North America’s eyes to the style of modern dance when many people were disdainful of an idea of a dance form other than ballet. She started a large movement in the United States by dancing based off of inward emotions and expressing them through violent, trembling, and jarring movements. She inspired many young dancers to follow in her footsteps, some even immigrating from foreign countries such as Russia and England to study along with Graham because her style of dance was offered no where else in the world.
