King’s protest was known for being Non- Violent. This was still the case, however, Dr. King wanted more direct action. “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor”. He noticed that those in power were not open to negotiations for the African Americans. He wanted to create a situation which left the opposers with no choice but to, negotiate solutions.

He played the leading role in the American Civil Rights Movement and believed in ensuring equality for all people, regardless of race. King was not afraid stepped out of his traditional bounds of society to gain publicity for his cause. Inspired by peaceful leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Benjamin Franklin, King fought for equality in a peaceful manner such as protest in economically disadvantaged areas and taught Americans to express love and diversity. Evidently, a retrospect of the civil rights movements would be insufficient without a reference to the liturgical MLK, at least in the view of most Americans. This implication of MLK as the linchpin of the civil rights movements is what evokes often facetious, and to some point antipathetic, responses from critiques and scholars equally, often disgruntled by the ignorance and misunderstanding of the general public about matters that were, in their opinions and based on evidences they have collected, closest to his heart.

The idea for the Poor People's campaign started after the Watts riots in LA. After seeing the mistreatment and violence urban cities like LA and Chicago, King realized the necessity of helping black people in major cities both within and outside the south. While he remained in his non-violent means of protesting, King used economic protests as a means of protesting capitalism and the treatment of all poor people. In King’s final speech, given to sanitation workers in Memphis, he outlines how those listening are to protest large corporations: “tell your neighbors not to buy Coca-Cola in Memphis. Go by and tell them not to buy Sealtest milk… we are putting pressure where it really hurts.”
For the five decades since march organizers lifted up their twin goals of "jobs and freedom". The end of Jim Crow and legal segregation opened pathways to public to corporate jobs with many companies and governments embracing racial diversity. Millions of blacks surged out of poverty, with many achieving the middle class or even affluence. King was able to achieve these goals by promoting and marching peacefully. Inspiring a huge amount of people with empowering words.
Martin Luther King Jr. helped us realize that segregation and poverty are wrong. He also helped us realize that we should treat people the same. No matter race, color, or gender. He has impacted our everyday lives with the Civil Rights Act and his “I Have a Dream…” speech. He is an important man with an important history.
