Mary McLeod Bethune Success is a key to making your mark on the work, but no one is gifted with success. Not everyone will be given rights, granted an equal life, or given the right to speak your mind. What makes your mark is your way to keep your head up, say what you know is right, and what you do when you see the wrong in your world. This strong woman struggled to balance plantation life with education, yet she eventually found her way to show her voice. Mary McLeod Bethune had made her mark and has shown her success so others can find theirs.
Mary McLeod Bethune was an educator, activist, president of the National Association of Colored Women and founded the National Council of Negro Women. Mary Jane Mcleod birth was on July 10, 1875, in South Carolina; Mary was born as a child of former slaves and grew up in poverty. When a missionary opened a school nearby for African-American children, Bethune was the only child of her family to go. Later, a scholarship from the Scotia Seminary, a school for girls, North Carolina, was given to Bethune. Mary went to the Dwight Moody's Institute for Home and Foreign Missions in Chicago, after graduating from the seminary in 1893. Bethune completed her studies there. Returning to Florida for her retirement, Bethune died on May 18, 1955. Bethune is remembered for her work to advance the rights of both women and African Americans. Before her death, Bethune penned her will and testament, which served as a reflection of her life and legacy. As Bethune wrote, “I leave you a thirst for education. Knowledge is the prime need of the hour.” Since Bethune’s passing, she has been honored in many ways and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
