On April 4th of 1928 Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. She was given the name “Maya” by her brother, Bailey. Both Maya and Bailey were sent to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas after her parents divorced. When Maya went to visit her mother at the age of eight she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend.
Marguerite, “Maya,” Angelou was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. At the age of three, Maya’s parents divorced, and she and her brother, Bailey, moved to Stamps, Arkansas to live with their grandmother. The family owned and operated a general store at which many people shopped. When Maya was seven, she and Bailey moved back to St. Louis to live with their biological mother. One year later, Maya was raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman.

I chose her because she inspires me to do more than what I am doing. While she was alive, she was an author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, and poet. This essay will talk about her life and her accomplishments and what she went threw.
Firstly, there are many interesting facts about maya Angelou. She actually had many jobs including singer,dancer,actress, composer, etc. Maya Angelou had a hard early life. Her brother even gave her the name maya. Maya Angelou also got many awards in her life.
By the time teen Maya Angelou was sixteen years old, she became pregnant with a baby boy, she named, Guy Johnson. Once Maya Angelou was no longer a young girl she was determined to travel outside of United States of America, making a huge difference and transitioning from girl to woman. Then finally Maya Angelou became a female African American Activist Civil Rights Leader who was famous for being a writer, singer, actress, author, director, stage and screen performer, also most well-known poet. Throughout her career, Angelou has earned several awards and accomplished many accomplishments, including receiving a Grammy award. Her best known art work was entitled, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

I chose this person because I think it was interesting how managed to do all of these shows on broadway, and got to create a whole bunch of books herself. Many people interviewed her, about her books and everyone finds all her books inspiring, and everything else she does is inspiring. Another reason I also picked Maya Angelou is because she was one of the first black woman to have certain screenplays and be on different shows and sing.
I believe that one individual can be great at multiple things. The reason being is because Maya Angelou is a woman who has accomplished several things in her 86 years of life which is highly impressive. She’s a poet, an actress chef and countless more. She had numerous occupations and has succeeded in each and everyone despite the fact that she was experiencing racism and discrimination. For her hard work, determination, and passion she won the Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for writing.
Maya Angelou lived during the rampant genocide of the Ku Klux Klan which greatly influenced her life and works. Many difficulties bombarded her daily life, leaving her with every reason to run away and become a mute. In fact, she spent a length of time refusing to speak a word to anybody, and for good reason. Many experiences, both good and bad, were able to be expressed eloquently into her works of literature which awed the world. Maya Angelou lead a captivating life from her early years and throughout her teenage and adult years allowing her to accomplish much.
Maya Angelou recalls the first seventeen years of her life, discussing her unsettling childhood in her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Maya and Bailey were sent from California to the segregated South to live with their grandmother, Momma. At the age of eight, Maya went to stay with her mother in St. Louis, where she was sexually abused and raped by her mother’s boyfriend, Mr. Freeman. Maya confronts these traumatic events of her childhood and explores the evolution of her own strong identity. Her individual and cultural feelings of displacement, caused by these incidents of sexual abuse, are mediated through her love for literature.

Being a civil rights activist, social activist, and role model for women makes Maya Angelou a historical figure who has made a huge impact in American society and in American history. Born poor and black, she was a childhood victim of rape, shamed into silence. She was a young single mother who had to work at strip clubs for a living.
Maya Angelou was a strong African-American women who made an influential impact on the Civil Rights Movement, in bother her actions, and her literature. Her life experiences and courage helped others, and made her work influential. During Maya’s early life, she experienced many hardships that shaped her into the person many remember her as. Born on April 4, 1928, she only lived in St. Louis, MO for three years before her parents got divorced, and Maya, along with her mother and brother, moved in with her grandparents in Arkansas.
