Are you a person that likes to play a little too much? The character Mercutio in the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare is a round, static character that likes to have fun and is also loyal. Sometimes, he can be a not so nice person when something doesn’t go his way. His actions and personality will come back at him later in the play, even though he says that other people are responsible for his death.
There were many violent ends within the play that all began with Romeo and Juliet’s forbidden love, and one was the passing of five characters. Mercutio was a relative to the prince and as such he was untouchable. On the other hand he also subtly chose sides. Being friends with the Montagues was the beginning of the road to his death. He was an extremely witty person within the play constantly making jokes, but he also had a vivid imagination coming up with eloquent stories for the trio to hear.
Who caused Romeo and Juliet’s Death?! We all know that Romeo and Juliet killed themselves because they loved each other and they wouldn’t last a day without each other…. But, who was the cause of their death?? In the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, the three characters who are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet are Tybalt , Mercutio , and Juliet’s parents.
Who is the responsible person? In my personal opinion, I think that Mercutio is the one responsible for the events of Romeo and Juliet, and here's why. At the beginning, he is bugging Romeo for being sad about Rosaline. Then when Peter asked for help, he took it as an invitation for themselves. “We shall go for you to see beauties far more beautiful than Rosaline.”
In “Romeo and Juliet” Mercutio's character adds humor to the play by being witty and courageous yet at the same he shows loyalty towards Romeo. Mercutio brings up how Tybalt wants to fight Romeo. Benvolio questions who Tybalt is and Mercutio jokingly responds: “More than Prince of Cats. Oh, he’s the courageous/captain of compliments” (II.4.20-21). Mercutio compares Tybalt's actions to ones of a cat; little and agile yet swift and territorial.
Mercutio is making light of Romeo’s deep depressing love for Rosaline, he’s mocking love and making it a joke. This creates an emphasis on Romeo’s utter affixation with love. Mercutio’s playfulness and ability to make a serious subject humorous and reasonable bring out the deep, dark, and depressing side of Romeo, who is completely the opposite when it comes to love. Romeo does not see love as a joke and we see him fall into a depression, Mercutio only makes this sadness more apparent as he talks so jokingly of love. Tybalt probably wondered why Romeo now loved the Capulets as much as he loved his own family, the Montagues. This is an example of dramatic irony. You could therefore argue tat Romeo is to blame for Mercutio's death because if Romeo was not so love-struck when he met Juliet he wouldn't have married her. The day before he was totally in love with Rosaline. If the marriage between Juliet nd him hadn't happened then Romeo probably would have fought ybalt and Mercutio would not have been involved at all, therefore Mercutio would not have been killed.
Mercutio is different from Romeo because he does not believe in love and makes fun of Romeo and falling in love so heavily all the time. When Romeo describes his love for Rosaline using a rose with thorns as a metaphor. Mercutio laughs and says ”If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking and you beat love down”(I.4.27-28). In another scenario of Romeo and Mercutio’s foils is when Romeo tells his friends about a dream he had about the party and is expecting a disastrous outcome of the party. Mercutio makes fun of Romeo because he does not believe that dreams can become visions of impending danger.
Jokester Inside Mercutio The embodiment of personas is what makes us act the way we do on a regular basis. In William Shakespeare’s, “Romeo and Juliet”, most times Mercutio is all laughs and jokes and doesn’t have a care in the world for anything. Mercutio even makes jokes to his enemy Tybalt who is a Capulet. Shakespeare uses witty comments and casual remarks to portray Mercutio to be the jokester of the book.
Arguably William Shakespeare’s most famous play, Romeo and Juliet follows two star-crossed lovers who struggle to hide their love from their feuding families. Much like how Shakespeare explores both the differences and the relationship between the Capulets and the Montagues, the play highlights the correspondence of opposing themes through three characters named Mercutio, Benvolio, and Tybalt, Romeo’s two friends and sworn enemy. Shakespeare includes Romeo’s counterparts to distinguish his unique personality and to emphasize relationships between major contrasting subjects in the play: comedy and tragedy, peace and conflict, and love and anger. Mercutio acts as both Romeo’s foil and the donor of much light-hearted humor within the play, which contrasts the tragic events that inevitably occur.
Throughout the whole play both Romeo and Mercutio were there for each other when in need of a friend or even just some comforting words. Mercutio always seems to say the right things to put Romeo back on track and in focus. While Romeo was relentlessly weeping over his unrequited love for Rosaline, Mercutio, with his wise and caring words said, “‘Why is not this not better than groaning for love? Now art thou sociable.
All stories, plays, and literary arts, have characters that propel the plot forward with their actions and decisions, and in William Shakespeare's play, “Romeo and Juliet”, Mercutio is that character. He plays an extremely important and essential role in the play. Without him, Romeo wouldn't have met his love, and also enemy, Juliet Capulet. Mercutio was also the one that provoked a fight with Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, and as a result, Tybalt killed Mercuito and this is where and when Romeo and Juliet’s love story starts to collapse. Mercutio is an optimistic, loyal, and comedic character, also the kinsman of Prince Escalus.
In the Act 1 Scene 4, Romeo was infatuated with Roseline. Mercutio mocked him. He told Romeo that he was “a lover” and he should “borrow cupids wings”. Mercutio convinced Romeo to attend a party at the Capulet’s.
