Meriwether Lewis lost a parent at a young age and inherited their wealth little did he know that he was on his way to a much greater and successful future.
Early in life, Meriwether Lewis learned good comes out of even the worst of things. Meriwether Lewis was born on August, 18 ,1774 in Albemarle County, Virginia to Lucy Meriwether and William Lewis (Harper). Shortly after Lewis’s birth, his father went off to serve in the military (Harper). He would eventually return when Lewis was five only to die of pneumonia after crossing a freezing a river to come home from serving (Harper). His mother eventually married John Marks (Harper). Lewis inherited his father’s wealth at the age of eighteen and everything was good but, he decided to serve in the militia anyway which shaped history (“Meriwether Lewis”). During his time serving in the militia Lewis served as a volunteer in 1794 with the troops called out to stomp the Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania (“Meriwether Lewis”). Lewis served for a while a became the rank of captain (“Meriwether Lewis”). After this in early 1801 President Jefferson offered Lewis a job as his private secretary (Danisi). Lewis served as Jefferson’s private secretary for about a year and a half when Jefferson asked Lewis to lead the expedition through the Louisiana Territory, Lewis gladly accepted and asked William Clark to serve as co-captain whom also accepted (Harper). Together Lewis and Clark gathered over thirty men and created The Corps of Discovery (Harper). Lewis and Clark along with The Corps of Discovery successfully Navigated and Documented the Louisiana Territory (Harper). After the expedition Jefferson made Lewis the governor of the Louisiana Territory (Harper). During his time as governor Lewis did many things, he oversaw the creation of the Territory of Arkansas, and he ordered for the creation of a road connecting St. Louis and New Madrid, Missouri (Harper).
