At first, in 622, Muhammad allowed particular Jewish practices participate in the rituals of Islam, and even for a short time, the Jewish and Muslims both prayed towards Jerusalem. In 624, Muhammad directed umma to pray in the direction of Mecca because he received a vision from God telling him to do so. This is what caused the division of the Jewish tribes.
