The rise of Islam was much more subtle and slow than the rise of Christianity and Judaism. The religion began in 610, when a man named Muhammed began to receive messages from God. He moved to the city of Mecca, which is still considered the holiest place in regards to Islam, to listen to God and learn from these messages. The teachings of Muhammed helped him gain followers quickly, and as he did, the religion spread. Christians and Jews tolerated Islam so easily because there were many similarities between the religions.
