At the time, it seemed like a decent idea to many of the French people. They longed for another strong emperor in their corner, once again their hope remained that he would bring with him peace to France. As you can imagine, the liberals would not have been happy with the quick decision making done by Emperor Napoleon III. Both liberals and radicals had spent the time fighting for a say in their government, but the way that Napoleon III declared himself Emperor angered them. The liberals wanted to give more power to the elected parliaments; although, Louis-Napoleon won the presidential election, he abused his power by taking over as Emperor.
He had many wars that he fought in order to increase his land. He grew the country the France with these wars. By growing the land that France owned he increased his power by increasing the amount of people he ruled over, and also gained the respect of the people making it easier for him to be an absolute
He was very controlling and lived a luxurious lifestyle. France, at the time, had Three Estates and the Third contained 90 percent of the entire population. This population was not rich, yet they still paid 100 percent of the taxes.
Napoleon spread enlightenment ideas that benefited the people in France. He created the Napoleonic code, which was basically the first written document of laws. That meant that the judge could not change anything, but the laws applied to all citizens equally and protected their rights. He gave people religious tolerance, which means people had religious freedom. He also created a system of meritocracy, giving positions based on people's talents and not to the ones that are higher classes.
Firstly, he created a new government called the consulate which gave absolute power to three individuals (he was one of them). Later on, in 1804, Napoleon declared himself emperor of France. This act directly opposed the revolution’s idea of a constitutional government. During this time, he created a new bureaucracy based on ability and not social class. Anyone had the opportunity to be a noble, one had to only be qualified based on their skill.
Towards the beginning of the nineteenth century France was suffering from inflation, overpopulation, corruption within the government, unfair parliamentary voting, and several other things. Once Napoleon became in charge reforms within the government, and france’s economy were quickly being made. The reforms he contributed are some of the prime examples of how he was an effective leader of France. Napoleon created equal taxation for the citizens of France so that now the burden of the taxes were not just on the third estate. One of his more significant reforms was his Napoleonic code.
Napoleon knew what he had to do in order to please the people; therefore, he did it. First, Napoleon created a national banking system, and he set up a flow of incoming taxes. Second, Napoleon opened up lycées to male students of all backgrounds. Third, he signed agreements with the Catholic Church creating a new relationship between the two. Fourth, he created the Napoleonic Code which helped in bringing order into France.
Napoléon Bonaparte: A Heartless Ruler or a Great Influence Napoléon Bonaparte is seen by most as a butcher or a heartless dictator, but seldom do they remember the positive changes that Napoléon himself brought towards the world. Napoléon was an emperor who conquered lands and ultimately lost them in the end, hence the downfall of Napoléon. Napoléon is remembered as one of the greatest military conquerors in history (Napoleon I, 2004), but people have forgotten the side of him that has influenced and changed Europe. Napoléon has contributed and influenced, directly or indirectly, many of Europe’s culture in science, government, and even the arts.
When Napoleon crowned himself as emperor, he made many new policies and changes to France and its government, which most people favored. For example, he controlled prices, built roads and canals, and encouraged new industry. He also let the émigrés return to France, as long as they took an oath of loyalty. He recognized the peasants’ rights to the lands that they had bought from the Church and nobles during the Revolution. Napoleon allowed anyone to get any job they wanted as long as they had the right abilities for the job.
He created the Code Napoleon, which guaranteed equality under the law, regulation of the economy, absolute security of wealth and private property, and the end of feudalism (Pagano “Napoleon Domestic Program Good”). The Code Napoleon showed his desire for lower class citizens, such as poor farmers, to have an equal opportunity to succeed. His actions to regulate the economy alleviated the issues with taxing the Third Estate faced. Napoleon extended liberty even to those he conquered. In a speech to troops, Napoleon said that “there is one condition you must swear to fulfill - to respect the people whom you liberate...your property, your religion, and your customs will be respected” (Document 1).
His 3 natural rights: Life, Liberty, & Property, allowed the people more freedom to what they should be open to have/do. His ability to inspire the people of France to fight and end the Old Regime also made a big impact on their society and allowed more equality. Many people quoted him in the creation of major political papers so therefore he has made an impact on countless societies and generations. He made major changes to history. He is still an possibly will forever affect the present and the future.
Napoleon did many things for France. Including bring the churches back and letting people practice their own religion again. Which most people did not do back then because if someone supported their religion more than the leader then the leader would not have complete control over them. They can not do anything to them cause the worst thing that could happen is that they die and go to heaven. Also he he opened up schools in France that was free for the boys even if they was poor, even if it was not for the girls to attend to, but that was common back then.
Before the rule of Napoleon, saw that the ex-peasants were having trouble paying for basic necessities because of the high taxes. Now, they are able to spend some money on things they want because they do not have to pay it all in taxes.” Because France’s economy was improving, Napoleon makes sure that the third estate was not required to pay high taxes which they could not affotrd. This makes the people who earn less money more content since they were now able to spend the money they usually would on taxes, on things for their own pleasure instead. Since everyone is to pay taxes depending on how much money they made, it caused more people to live happy and more economically stable
