When John D Rockefeller was just a teenager he worked for a bunch of different small businesses. At 16 he got his very first job as an assistant bookkeeper for a commission merchants and produce shippers. At the age of 20 he quit as a bookkeeper and went out on his own with a business partner where they worked as commission merchant in hay,meats, grains, and other goods. By the end of their first year they had a gross domestic product of $450,000. Rockefeller later realized that there was an opportunity in the oil business when it was booming up in the western Pennsylvania in the early 1860’s. He established his first oil refinery in 1863 near Cleveland just a little ways outside of Pittsburgh. In just 2 short years of his oil refinery being open it was the largest one around. In the 1870’s Rockefeller and his partners incorporated the Standard Oil Company and it was a huge success. Not too long after Standard Oil Company was successful they started buying out their competition. After the Standard Oil Company grew huge they started making favorable deals with the railroad to ship their oil to different places across the states. The Standard Oil Company with the purchases of pipeline and terminals, the reason for this was so they had transportation of their own. When the Standard Oil Company was open just a little less than a decade they nearly had a monopoly of the oil business in the United States. The public and the U.S. congress took notice to the Standard Oil Company and they said it seemed impossible to march.
