John D. Rockefeller John D. Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839 into humble family and over time became owner of the Standard Oil Company. As a young boy, one could tell he was a business man at heart; John was always trying to sell small things to gain money. He had a passion for discovering the secrets of business and understanding how to obtain a successful life. He thrived in the business and became the most powerful monopoly at the time. With the wealth that came with his business, also led to controversy over his actions. At the age of fourteen, John emerged himself into work, taking on difficult business without hesitation. Two years later, he began his first real job in an office as a bookkeeper. As he became older, Rockefeller had the need to thrive as an individual and pursued his dream with a business partner, both proving to be successful. He was the leader of America 's first monopoly and was an example to all other businesses to come. Congress began to realize the enormity of the business and the threats it presented to the public, and the monopoly was frowned upon. In 1890, the Sherman Antitrust Act was put in place and later, Ohio claimed the Standard company as a monopoly and claimed it violated laws. Rockefeller already had a solution and divided the company, but remained in power over all the locations and money. John Rockefeller was an example of both vertical and horizontal integration; he combined firms into one organization and took over all other businesses. He gained control to 90% of the oil in America and dominated the economy. While some disagreed with his ways, others were able to see his achievements with respect and admiration. Through his life, Rockefeller was able to set the stage and be an example to those to come through his accomplishments, aggression, and
