Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, better known as the ‘Gracchi Brothers’ were a pair of tribunes descending from the plebs from the 2nd century BCE who sought to introduce land reforms and other legislations that aligned with their populist views/ideas. It can be said that the career of the two brothers was marked by murder, riots and outright manipulation of the power they were granted which completely altered the state of Roman politics- aiding in the breakdown of the Roman Republic. The legislation they sought to pass essentially redistributed major aristocratic land ownership among the commoners such as the urban poor and veterans. After achieving little success during the early stages of the reforms, both were assassinated by enemy parties.

In this essay, we will look at the causes of the outbreak of Civil War in Rome in 49BC and the reason why Julius Caesar was greatly responsible for it. Although it is clear that Caesar was the main cause of the Civil War, we must not neglect to mention other factors which contributed to it. As such, we will consider whether Caesar’s refusal to give up his armies, the actions of the optimates against the populares or fear of prosecution, led to the war. This essay is, therefore, only concerned with the events leading up to the war and not the specifics of the war itself.

Two fundamental questions normally surround the history of any war: whether the war was inevitable and if it was necessary. These same questions emerge any time during debates regarding the American Civil war. The most cited cause of the Civil war is the secession of certain southern states that formed the Confederate States of America in January 1861. Thomas Bonner writes "Civil War Historians and the "Needless War" Doctrine" arguing that Southern Carolina seceded in 1860, followed by six other states by January the following year. A deep analysis of the events leading to the war indicates that the Union and the Confederates had profound ideological, economic, political, and social differences.
Pre-Civil War: 1859- In October, a small group of white and black men held an attack at Harpers Ferry, the federal arsenal. Even as Rome was under attack from separate militaries, it was also decaying from within thanks to a severe financial economic crisis. Continuous wars and excessive spending had significantly lightened imperial banks, and unfair taxation and inflation increased the gap between the rich and poor. Attempting to avoid the tax collector, many associates of the wealthy groups fled to the countryside and set up self-governing communities.
In his second presidential inauguration, Abraham Lincoln mentions that part of the cause of the civil war was due to the slave’s interests. He also talks about a plan that he has which involves the ending of the problems beginning by providing assistance to those who were adversely affected by the war. The primary objective of his strategy was to attain peace both within the state and also with other countries. The Almighty is mentioned in a bigger proportion of this address, and he points out that it is ironic for people to read the same Bible and yet seek to use other people (slaves) for their benefit. In the end, he doesn’t fail to recognize that the most important role of Lord Almighty to be the righteous judge.
