The two cities Florence and Venice competed with each other. This environment of competition made both cities become the center of the Renaissance.They both acquired skills that helped them evolve as a culture and increase there success in business and government. In Venice was the doge. He was a member of the nobility who was elected to the office for life.The most notable Renaissance doge was Andrea Gritti. Gritti used his own financial resources and his personal influences to transform his city into a major Renaissance culture. (Levack, Muir, & Veldman, p. 369) Gritti employed many people of the arts to move to the city. Greek architecture can be seen in Venice. Churches were modeled after Greek churches.
