World War 1 was a war fought from 1914-1918 between Germany and Austria-Hungary (Central Powers) against Russia, France, Serbia, Britain, Japan, Italy, and the United States (Allied Forces). More countries were involved but these were the major players. The spark of the war was when Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, Bosnia by a member of The Black Hand. After years of tension, this was the greatest excuse Austria-Hungary needed to attack Serbia as well as the beginning of the Great War. The leadership of Austria-Hungary (A-H) had given Serbia an ultimatum that was designed for them not to comply so A-H could in fact declare war on Serbia. A sense of nationalism had led to each country believing they were right in their decisions. It would affect the entire world. It made Russia move itself out of the war and therefore the United States had to step in. Russia was tired of the leadership of Tsar Nicholas II and this led to many riots and revolts from the working class people. It brought the Soviet Union into existence under Vladimir Lenin in November 1917. Lenin was responsible for organizing a group called the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks would overtake the Russian monarchy and set up provisional government. This was the beginning of the Soviet Union being a socialist country. The Soviets had great plans but after some time there was famine in the country and overall distrust within the structure of the leadership. Millions of people were dying from starvation. The US headed up a relief effort to feed these millions of people. This alone affected the US economy.
