His journey of empowering himself to become an autodidact – people who have been self- taught- started the first moment when he used practical ways such as writing words that he did not know on the table. Finding gold is extremely difficult, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing or where you’re going. In “A Women Who Went to Alaska”, May Kellogg Sullivan uses third person limited so the reader can understand how the miners were affected by the governments harsh rules. In the excerpt “Klondike Gold Rush”, Gordon Stables explains the miners’ experience of voyaging to the Yukon hoping to return with bags of gold. The way the author provides the information is so that the reader can fully understand how harsh the trip was for so little in return.

He thought that the best thing he could do to improve his comprehension would be to study and learn words from a dictionary. He spent two days reading a dictionary and became overwhelmed by all of the words that he did not know even existed. He began copying all of the words onto his tablets, one page every day, and he would read them aloud to himself. Eventually, he was able to remember almost all of the words he had studied. This started his personal quest to improve his penmanship and study words to gain literacy. He began by copying the first page of the dictionary word by word. He then read the words he had written in his own handwriting out loud over, and over.

Jack Griffith “Jack” London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who wrote about realism and naturalism. Jack was part of the radical literacy group called “The Crowd” which was located in San Francisco. Jack was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. Jack’s early family life was very hectic as a lot of problems occurred with his parents.
Jack London has written numerous stories, many of which take place in the Yukon of Canada. The location of these stories plays a crucial part in the outcome of it all. He uses this location mainly due to his work he did there. After working in the Klondike of Alaska, London returned to his home and started to publish books. His characters were most often males with a sense of adventure.
In addition, he was jealous of Bimbi, who always over controlled the conversations. Therefore, Malcolm X put all of his effort into learning new words and their meaning in each section of the dictionary. By writing down the words on the tablet and read them back to himself after days, his vocabulary was broadened. As a result, he could read, understand what a book said, write his own words, and have interested in reading.
