Jack Griffith “Jack” London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who wrote about realism and naturalism. Jack was part of the radical literacy group called “The Crowd” which was located in San Francisco. Jack was a passionate advocate of unionization, socialism, and the rights of workers. Jack’s early family life was very hectic as a lot of problems occurred with his parents. Jack was born near Third and Brannan Streets in San Francisco. His mother was Flora Wellman, a music teacher and spiritualist. His father was William Chaney, an astrologer. His father had asked his wife to get an abortion and she refused. In her desperation, she shot herself. She was not seriously injured but she was temporarily deranged due to it.
