How was the Aztecs lifestyle altered because of the Spanish? The Spanish Conquest in Mexico over the Aztecs in the year 1521 resulted in the victory of the Spanish. This was a huge time of change in the Aztecs’ lifestyle. In this time, changes in nearly every aspect of the Aztecs’ life occured. Adjustments in areas such as the Aztecs’ very worldview, as well as beliefs in religion. Following this, reconstruction in the Aztecs’ way of talking and writing were enforced by the Conquistadors, who spoke Spanish and wrote in words instead of pictures. The conquistadors had taken over, the Aztecs previous social status and hierarchy was in pieces. Formerly, the Aztecs’ had full control of all their trade, military, and government. But now, after Cortes has taken over they’ve been bumped all the way to the bottom of their hierarchy, where they no longer have control over their beautiful city. In the period before the Spanish invaded, every citizen had rights to live peacefully as long as they followed city rules placed by Moctezuma. Everyone in the Aztec Empire had the right to learn and everyone had sufficient job opportunities. Tragically, with the takeover, the great Aztec people were enslaved and turned into landworkers. In return, they were given basically no legal rights, little food and water, and worked for no pay. These poor slaves were often abused and mistreated. Additionally, what they were promised was never fulfilled by the Spanish people. The New Aztecs hierarchy was now changed to one called the encomienda system. In this new form of government Spanish people were given land and Aztec workers to work on it, in exchange for giving taxes to the Spanish Crown. Aztecs’ language changed due to a new writing style and language forced into their lives by the Spanish. After this, religion, human sacrifices, and the worshiping of Gods all were demolished and crushed as the conquistadors enforced the new religion, Catholicism. Finally, the social hierarchy was left in ruins as power shifted from that of the great Aztec Empire, over to the Spanish Crown.
