To What Extent Did the Strategies and Tactics of the CCP and PLA affect the Outcome of the Chinese civil war?
Between the years 1945 and 1949, China was engaged in a civil war between the Chinese Communist Party(CCP) and the Chinese Nationalist Party(GMD). The CCP, lead by Mao Ze Dong, and GMD, lead by Chiang Kai Shek, had previously formed the first and second united front in order to defeat the warlords that had control over China as well as Japan

Firstly, the CCP were not only able to hold their own against the GMD, but also defeat them in multiple battles against the GMD by using guerrilla tactics. Although Mao Ze Dong was the face of communism, there were many people behind the scenes of the communist party that contributed to the military’s success. Mao’s generals were fiercely loyal to them and would not face much defiance from his generals. As Michael Lynch says, “[Their loyalty] extended to their allowing the credit for their own ideas and military success to go to him.” Two commanders that were pivotal for the CCP’s military victory were Zhu De and Lin Biao. Zhu De was the commander in chief of the PLA and was responsible for turning the conscripted men of the Red Army into a competent guerrilla force. He was also responsible for giving the PLA modern weapons and technology. He believed that it was imperative for the guerrilla soldiers to be able to effectively communicate with each other, and so pushed for the production of radios and other communications equipment to be given to the soldiers.
