Mao and Deng both transformed China in similar and different ways. Mao tended to be harsher, wanting everyone to conform to his idea of the cultural revolution of China. While Deng wanted people to have more capitalistic ideas, allowing people to run things themselves without harsh control from the government. This DBQ will discuss how China ran under the similar and different political, diplomatic, and economic rules of Mao and Deng.

Political freedom was not something that can be found under the rule of Mao. Mao believed in socialism, dictatorships of proletarians, communism, and Marxism-Leninism of Mao-Zedong thought. His work “The Little Red Book” contained all of his ideals commonly known as Mao Zedong thoughts. Within the cultural revolution set forth by Mao, but upheld by Deng, all of China had to refer to “The Four Basic Principles -1979”. They go as follows, “ 1. We must uphold the socialist road 2. We must uphold the dictatorship of the proletariat 3. We must uphold the leadership of the communist party 4. We must uphold Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought” (Document 10). Mao and Deng tended to interact with big world powers such as the USA. This is a big change because, since the beginning of Ancient China, the geographically isolated country never saw a need to reach out to not-so-neighboring countries unless it was for trading silk on the Silk Road. Mao and Nixon met in 1972 to discuss business matters but also to prove that Mao was not out to get all capitalist societies, (Document 9).
