With the rise of Chiang Kai Shek as the leader of the Nationalist Party (GMD) in China in 1925, came the rising hatred towards the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the fall of the United Front. The result, the Chinese Civil War, was a play for power that expanded over 22 years. Furthermore, with the emergence of the Second World War, foreign powers were bound to intervene in the situation in China, especially with Japan’s invasion of Manchuria. Although China was essentially a battleground during and after the World War for foreign powers, the foreign intervention did not have such an impact on the result of the civil war. The Communists were able to take advantage of the situation and expand their territories. Even though Chiang was pressured by the US to assent to the truce of 1946 which allowed the CCP to gain further power, it was the CCP’s overall strength and the GMD’s weakness that lead to the result of the war. Throughout the 22 years in which the war spanned, the CCP was able to mobilise popular support as they expanded through to the countryside and an increase in peasant membership in the CCP occurred. This support was extremely crucial to the CCP’s victory as it led to the encirclement of Nationalist troops and their defeat. The GMD was encircled by the countryside population of peasants and without their presence and their support of the CCP, a Communist victory would not have occurred. During the fighting, the CCP also convinced the Nationalist troops to surrender and desert their posts as their propaganda promised food to those who turned their backs on the GMD, which was important during the starving winters.
