The year was 1865, and the United States Civil War had just come to a close. Now, to many people, this was just a historical event or a conflict between the North and South. But in reality, it is much more than that. The effects of the Civil War were not only monumental back then, but they also still impact and shape our country today. Everything from our politics to our national identity and many things in between were all at least somewhat influenced by the war. The enduring impact of the Civil War on modern society is evidenced by its influence on political ideologies, socio-economic inequality, and ongoing debates surrounding national identity. Another thing the Civil War did for the national identity of the United States, which is possibly the most important thing, is that it made us one nation and made us all Americans. Prior to the Civil War, the states, while still being in the same country, were very loosely connected and practically independent of each other. But, after the war, the Civil War became our anchor. Ever since, whether big government or small government, whether doves or hawks, black or white, we have all been one thing: Americans” (Towner, 2011). In conclusion, the Civil War had and still has numerous impacts and effects on the United States in the past and today. The effects of the war are profound and very complex, changing political ideologies, socio-economic inequality, and national identity. Politically, the war pushed the United States towards a more powerful central government and also defined both the Republican and Democratic political parties.
