The Downfall of Rome Rome was a powerful empire. Rome has been at war many times in order to protect its land. There are many theories that contribute to the fall of Rome. Rome had a very unorganized way to elect leaders and they were just a very unorganized society. The reasons that contributed to the fall of Rome were that Rome was politically corrupt, had excessive military spending, there was a rise in inflation and taxes. Firstly, Rome was politically corrupt. Roman political leaders were often elected through the power of personal armies (Guided notes). This means that whoever had the biggest personal army was most likely to get elected. This shows us that the capability of the leader was not as relevant as the popularity of the leader. “Constantine and his successors increasingly used their power to control the people” (DiscoveryEd). This shows us that Rome soon became a completely authoritarian government. The governmental leaders felt too much pressure so they just decided to control the people. These reasons reveal to us that the possibility of Rome having a corrupt government is very possible. Barbarians, people who are not Roman, entered Rome in search of land and food (Guided notes). These people got past the Roman borders and were taking over Roman land. They were also using key resources such as food and water, resources that the Romans needed. “In the year 9, a Roman army was sent to subdue the tribes in the forest beyond the Rhine River. The army was massacred, almost to the last man” (DiscoveryEd). This shows us that the Barbarians were incredibly aggressive and violent.
