Government Over the Last 125 Years The government has changed forever since the election of George Washington. In our modern-day society government is a touchy subject and shouldn’t be. The government used to be about serving our nation in a way that pleases the people and improves our day-to-day lives as Americans, however, nowadays the government seems to be about power, control, and fame. The government initially became a democracy to please the people and give them the power to choose who they wanted to represent them and their nation. However, the pushes for reform and change led it into many dark times that were upcoming. For example, the great depression. The great depression started because of the stock market crash caused by inflation and excessive loans. This may have not been a direct cause but the reason for these loans and inflation was to please the people. To live the American dream was not easy and many Americans may have taken loans to try to fulfill their and many others’ dreams. The two major world wars also had a very strong effect on the role of government today because of the decisions made by presidents during those times. An example of this could be Woodrow Wilson and his attempt to form a treaty with Germany and the spiraling effect it had. I think the United States Government has changed severely and its values have been changed in a way for the worst. I think some of the more positive changes we’ve had as a nation would be getting rid of the drafting system for war, NATO, civil rights, our insurance and healthcare improvements, a stable economy, and steps towards caring for our environment. These effects have changed the states for the better and have sparked controversy yes, but have taken steps towards where we need to be as a nation. As for negative effects, there are plenty.
