The police force we all know has one main focus, to protect people and the property in which they stand. Patrolling the areas in which they are assigned to, they make sure civilians follow the law and they handle any breakage of the law as well. Our police force is supposed to make us feel safe wherever we are. They have undoubtedly done a great job in doing so. However, over the past couple of years, the police force has taken a toll for the worse.
Recently, it has become a popular story on the news where more and more poilce officers across the country are being arrested for innapropiate behavior. Cases where officers are using aggressive force to kicking a peron in the head, tackling a pregnant woman to the ground and pulling a weapon on teenagers at a pool. With some cases where a wrongful death occurs, riots from the community start to grow. Obviously, riots indicate a significant collapse in stability and order within the community and could be viewed as a sign of social breakdown. While such community turmoil could not constantly be concentrated on law enforcement behavior, it, undoubtedly, is the responsibility of the authorities to balance the cost of free speech with the damage it may cause.
Riots. They can also affect the organization in this case the L.A.P.D. for example. An unethical decision can weigh heavy on a department in the way citizens view the department. Unethical decisions can also hurt the moral of the department, as they are not seen trustworthy by the community. This is a common occurrence that is seen all across the nation in policing today.
The police are there for protection and security, not to cause fear in the people. They have also broken the trust of the people and created tension between the community and the
Even worse, police presence opens up the possibility of violence in community spaces that ought to be safe. That same man witnessed cops tossing one of his neighbors on the cement because he was gambling (Schenwar and Law p. 4). As these examples of the presence of police in the community suggest, rather than making police interactions less hostile, community policing just creates more opportunities for escalation and violence.
The stance that Solicitor General Frank Oberle takes in regards to the direction policing is going is a stance of optimism on community policing. He believes that the foundation of any effective policing agency is one that has community policing at the forefront (Citation). This notion of community policing being the foundation of an effective police agency is something I agree with. This is because a community that feels as though the police are apart of it rather than outside of it, is a community more likely to help the police when called upon. The other positive aspect of community policing is that it may help to reduce the us versus them mentality within the police agency itself.
In 1829 Police was seen to focus on crime prevention, deal with legal due processes, and work within local communities more collaborative to fight crime with more efficiency. According to Reith (1975) cited in “The Evolution of Policing” chapter 1, the ‘word’ policing meant management of order behaviour, laws, surveillance, arrests, fines, corporal punishment, as example arresting with use of force. More recently, authors such as Hopkins Burke (2004) defined ‘Policing’ as form of power, the act of persuasion or even assistance to community population, example of that are the cases of payback as salts, killings, forced recovery of stolen goods.
In fact, a police officer was quoted after a riot, “You can say that the cops had a 'hands-off ' policy during the riots. Well, we represented public opinion. Many of us were in the First World War, and we 're not going to pick on kids in the service”. There was quite a bit of controversy between how the riots started. Some believed it was racism that started the riots, however some believed it was caused by juvenile delinquents and white southerners.
Gang activity has been flourishing since the American Revolution in 1783 (Sante, 1991). Sadly, a great percentage of teenagers have thrived off of this gang activity. Gang activity within the youth is continuing to grow in many places such as Chicago and New York. Gang related homicides have even taken place in small towns such as Lynchburg, Virginia recently. The gang activity that is growing in the Unites States is directing our youth to death
People have started riots, movements, and protest over the past few years in different cities and states. Many people don’t like cops because they have killed so many innocent African American males and
One problem for example would be victimization. Howell states that “children who are victims of abuse or neglect are more likely to join gangs” (Howell). The child has an overwhelming feeling of neglect and just wants to be loved. This is a prime time for someone in a gang to begin to know the child and slowly convince him or her to join the gang. At this point, the child is unaware of what is happening.
Which usually leads to retaliations and therefore death of a rival gang
Sadly, during the last few years the relationship between the community and its police has significantly deteriorated. This has been due to the way some officers have handled certain situations in which the use of violence or deadly force could have been avoided. Because of this, some sectors of the community no longer trust their police; such distrust has gotten to the point that they rather take matters into their own hands than calling them for help. Although not all officers misbehave and abuse their power “it only takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch”. The media has also contributed in promoting the idea that most cops are bad by transmitting, over and over, videos of police officers abusing their power.
What path should the allied powers have gone down in order to create a world peace? Would the world consist of less poverty? How would world history and economy be different from how it is today? Nations opposing Adolf Hitler should have used collective security to potentially stop a world war. Three reasons why opposing nations should have used collective security is because if Hitler were appeased, then he would continue to imperialise other nations.
Police officers will have less equipment, vehicles, and tools. Which leaves more weapons on the street, more criminals loose, and fewer officers on duty. Officers might even end up homeless and unable to provide for their family’s due to their pay
