The mayans are the first documented use of cacao. Archaeological and historical evidence indicate chocolate was consumed primarily as a drink in the americas. It was used for religious purposes because it was thought to derive from the god Quetzalcoatl, a feathered serpent deity who protected and kept the knowledge of chocolate as a secret. There are aztec myths explaining that gods became angry when humans discovered chocolate. The Aztecs drank it cold while the Mayans drank it warm.
