Throughout the 1930s, countries who were upset over the outcome of World War I started to take aggression toward the other countries who had oppressed them through the Treaty Of Versailles. When Germany was defeated they became embarrassed and wanted to prove their superiority to other countries. However, Germany was in severe debt from World War I. As they struggled through financial ruin, many citizens were frustrated with the situation they faced and were extremely unhappy. This allowed the Nazi party and Hitler to rise to political power in Germany. Hitler was determined to restore glory to Germany and enact revenge on the countries that embarrassed them.
This economic destruction allowed for the rise of a Fascist movement led by Adolf Hitler. Document E, a speech by Von Papen, the Chancellor of Germany in 1932 detailed the desperate economic situation in Germany which gave rise to the Fascist Nazi regime. The Nazi used the Great Depression as the boost to gain support from the Germans. Due to America’s depression, Germany was put into a dire state as unemployment increased, thus resulted in the Nazi gaining votes during the 1933 election. The depression caused desperation within the people that made them feel that the Weimar Republic could not look after them or the country’s financial problems. Hitler made promises to get rid of the unemployment rate, thus gaining the support of the public. According to the peace treaty, Germany was required to be held accountable and full responsibility of World War I in Article 231. Not only were they expected to be at fault, they were also required to repay the $63 billion, reduced in 1921 to $33 billion, reparations for damaged done during the war. Germany were also limited to 100,000 men in an army and the amount of military defenses. These terms enraged Germany as they believed they were not at fault, which was enough to object the signing, despite not bringing any physical harm.

Hitler initially came to power during the great depression that had created massive economical obstacles to overcome. Therefore he introduced new ideas like autarky and nationalization of industries to improve Germany’s economy. The effects of the Great Depression had a significant impact in creating an environment to facilitate the rise of Nazism, leading to the Nazi’s ability to take advantage of fortuitous events.
