The Roman civilization is one of the most significant and influential civilizations in world history. The Roman Republic originated in the 8th century BCE and lasted for more than a thousand years. The Roman civilization made significant contributions to all fields, including law, engineering, architecture, and literature. This left a significant mark on Western culture that still influences us today. Rome was a very strong empire because of their military, rulership, and adaptation to different political systems. This paper will explore the various aspects of Roman civilization, including when and how the Roman Republic became an empire and the key features of rulership at this time.

The Roman Republic changed into the Roman Empire in 27 BCE. There were many problems with the Republic mainly including disagreements between rulers. Some military leaders, like Julius Caesar, became very powerful and took control of the government. After Julius Caesar was killed, his son Augustus became the strongest leader in Rome. He made a new way of governing that was much different from his father’s, and this was the start of the Roman Empire. Augustus made the Rae Gestae which are the deeds of Augustus. These deeds basically were all the achievements that Augustus wrote down when creating this empire. After Augustus made his shift into power many things had to be changed. The biggest thing would be rulership because if Rome wanted to thrive as an empire, they needed a strong ruler. Augustus was just that because he immediately established order. He was respected by many and was claimed to be humble and caring. In one of Suetonius’ excerpts, he claimed he would set up formal dinners and that he would show respect to everyone. Rome was a large and powerful empire that lasted for centuries because it was able to do three things well: incorporate military power, adapt to different political systems, and strengthening the economy. Military power was an important element of the Roman Empire's success. Rome had a well-trained and strong army that was feared by its enemies. The Roman military was organized and efficient, allowing Rome to conquer and maintain control over many territories. The army was also essential for keeping order within the empire which was something that the Roman Republic did not have
