Although during the Second Industrial Revolution they used many of the same styles they have used in the past, there were many changes to society during this time. This revolution changed society socially because there is improved health and education and a shift in the social classes. Society changed through art because there is new styles of art and architecture being created. Scientific breakthroughs also helped change society because people like Albert Einstein and Marie Curie created discovered new technologies that would help society advance. Modernism evolved and changed the literature during this time. Writers began thinking of real situations and addressed social problems in their writing, these writers were called naturalists. Symbolists developed cultural relativism and made their own meaning on the world. Art became immensely different. Paintings and drawings no longer represented reality or accuracy, instead they became abstract and different. Some styles of painting included impressionism, post impressionism, cubism, and abstract art. Pablo Picasso used these styles of painting to tell a story with his artwork. His paintings avoided visual reality and made the viewer think. Architecture changed very much during this time. Buildings were based on function rather than form. They were useful and strong instead of decorated. These buildings were made of new materials such as steel so they could withstand harsh conditions and last longer.
