During the Medieval period there were many different changes throughout Europe. Some of the major changes had to do with authority and religion. Many people different people were coming into power, and with the authority figures came different religious views. While the people were adjusting to all of the changes that were happening to them, they had to rediscover themselves as individuals again. Some had to decide if they were going to along with the changes or figure out something else. The book The Song of Roland explained how worked, what someone’s personality was like and how religion can affect every aspect of someone’s life entirely.

Christianity is the main religion practiced by Charlemagne and the other Franks throughout France. Religion was the motivation behind everything Charlemagne did for his country and others as well. He wanted to make other countries grow and prosper through Christianity just like he believed France had prospered. He would go from city to city, country to country to try and help the individuals in those places to switch over to Christianity. When those place would not convert Charlemagne would kill those individuals that would not switch religions. Charlemagne wanting all of Spain to be converted to Christianity is the main reason for the war that occurred in the book The Song of Roland. Saragossa was the last city left in Spain that Charlemagne had not visited. The king of Saragossa did not want Charlemagne to come to their city so he offered many things in order for Charles not to come. Although, Charlemagne liked all of the different things that were offered, he still wanted to go to Saragossa and have everyone convert to Christianity.
