In 1700 the americans took over the land that the cherokee indians were living on. The trail of tears caused many lives. The trail of tears is an event that we will always remember.

In 1700 after the Americans had won the war, Andrew Jackson was the president. He wanted settlers to come to the new land so he sent them off. The Cherokee indians were living there at the time, but they were peaceful. Everything was going well in the new land. Andrew Jackson was happy that they were settling good, so he started sending more and more people over to the new land. They needed more space for the settlers, so they started kicking the cherokee people off of their land.

In 1848 a guy named James W. Marshall who worked at a mill accidently discovered gold when he was working on his mill. He tried to keep the gold a secret that way he could get all of the money to himself, but it didn’t work, people found out. Once the word spread that there was gold found in california people started pouring from across the globe into california hoping to get rich. People all over the world came mostly through Nevada, Colorado, and Kansas.

It took a while to travel to get gold because their were so many people. Many towns were deserted when they all left to find gold. I caused over half a million people to come mine for gold. The population went from 8,000 in 1849 to 250,000 in less than three years.

At first you could find gold laying all over the river banks, As more and more people started coming they had to start panning. Another hard thing is all the panning made the river polluted so it got harder and harder to see through the water. It was risky because only less that half became richer but many people got poorer.
