William James William James was an American psychologist, philosopher, and physician. He was born on January 11, 1842 in New York City. As a child he developed a love for theology, something that occurred most likely from his father Henry James Sir. His parents made sure that all their children had access to high levels of education, each having their own private tutors. In his early years, William James studied painting and various sciences. After high school, he enrolled at the Lawrence Scientific School to study chemistry and physics. Soon after, however James decided that he wanted to take a different direction with his life and began studying at the Harvard Medical School in 1864. He earned his medical degree 5 years later, but never actually went on to practice medicine. He instead became a teacher at Harvard, specializing in both psychology and philosophy. Carl Rogers created modern therapy techniques, ones which are still used today. William James came up with a new idea for the human consciousness.
