Brazil, a country in South America was the only Latin American country to directly join the war effort. World War I was a war fought against the Central Powers which included Germany, Austria- Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria, and the Allied Powers which included Britain, France, Russia, Italy, and the United States. Brazil stayed neutral in the war, but German attacks on submarines and other economic reasons caused Brazil to declare war on the central powers.Brazil was a major trading power in the Atlantic trading market, but most of the population was illiterate and denied a role in public affairs. Although the economy improved with the war, the conditions of industrial workers and wages declined. Discontent existed throughout the people at their different levels of society. Militancy was subdued, but the security of the treatment of the social classes was not the same as before the war. The Industrial Revolution began in 1930 as significant Brazilian culture was introduced for the first time during World War I. Through the Industrialization service industries developed and the middle class developed and rose with knowledge and political power. The “Old Republic”, the government that existed during World War I was overthrown in 1930 by Getulio Vargas. He began a new regime that the state controlled. Social welfare schemes were linked to trade unions. In 1945 Industrial workers gained a voice and place in public affairs and politics. Today the group that controls the government of Brazil, the Workers Party, is attributed to Brazil’s participation in World War I (“Brazil Declares War on Germany”).
