The beginning of World War One was marked with the July Crisis, in which the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated by Serbian nationalists. But in all reality, the war started brewing long before the assassination. The complicated ties of alliances between countries, the growing sense of nationalism, and a strong militaristic world created a recipe for disaster (Strayer and Nelson, 884). Little came from this war besides the temporary peace from the poorly devised treaty of Versailles, which heavily placed blame on Germany.
