World War II and Canada World War II was the deadliest and most destructive war in history with over seventy-five million military personnel and civilians killed during the war period. The battles lasted six years and involved more than thirty countries around the globe. World War II was a major turning point for Canada and the world. The purpose of this essay is to inform about how Canadians participated in the Second World War and what life was like during that time. On May 8, 1945, VE Day was celebrated as the War officially ended in Europe. Source number shows Canadians celebrating in the streets of Toronto on VE-Day. Many Canadian soldiers were expecting to come home after years away to what the country was like before the War during the Great Depression and were surprised to see the changes that the country had made. The country had increased industrialization, became stronger on the global platform, and had a new stronger sense of pride and unity. Before the War, Canada was in the Great Depression and many Canadians were unemployed and left hungry. When the War broke, Canada had to provide military supplies for themselves and the allied powers, which boosted their economy and brought them out of the Great Depression. Also, because many young men were being drafted overseas, it created more job opportunities for Canadians who were staying at home, which helped the economy as well. Canada had now created a strong economy and had an increase in industrialization which helped establish new industries and modern corporations throughout the country. During the Second World War Canada showed the world on a global platform what its beliefs were, how they were able to aid its allies, and the capability of its military. Canada fought alongside the allied powers with shared beliefs of human rights and securing peace.
