1. Explain why, according to Lavoie, sarcasm is not an effective tool for teachers.
Sarcasm is not an effective tool when teaching because the student with a learning disability has become a victim. The teacher and students find it funny and laugh but the student with the learning disability does not find it funny. He or she feels ashamed for not knowing the answer to the question. The teacher is bullying the student and, brings the student’s self-esteem down. In addition, the teacher and classmates will forget the incident within five minutes. However, the student with a learning disability will remember it for the rest of the day.
2. The segment that includes the picture of the cow illustrates the difference between motivation and direct instruction. Explain the significance of that difference.

Sometimes a student with a learning disability has no idea why they got in trouble. They are telling the truth because from their perception is different. In the “Vanity” image stimulation, a person can see two different pictures. Since the teacher determines the correct answer for the stimulus, the correct answer was a woman looking in a mirror. Therefore, when the student answers the teacher’s question, the student thought she had the correct answer and was confident in her answer. However, since the student did not respond with the same answer the teacher saw.
