Do nightclub’s lockout policies reduce violence?
A lockout policy is a policy that prevents customers of the club from entering or re-entering the club a specific time prior to the closure of the club (Palk, Davey & Freeman, 2010) (Roth, 2014) (Miller, Coomber, Sonderlund & McKenzie, 2012). The government of Australia has introduced these policies in hope to prevent and reduce crime and violence act on our street.
What affects the violence?
Alcohol consumption promotes violent behaviour in individuals as it prevents the brain from rethinking the situation and its consequences. The rage seen in customers outside the clubs can be due to a variety of reasons ranging from conflict with staff, violating the rules of the clubs, offensive behaviour towards other in the club and conflict over other interpersonal relationships discussed by Briscoe & Donnell in 2002 and Graves, Graves, Semu, & Sam in 1981 (cited in Palk et al, 2010). The violent behaviour is also seemed to be linked to the trading hours of the clubs. It is suggested that there is an increase in the levels of violence in and around the clubs that have extended their trading hours. Instating the lockout policy has allowed the staff at the clubs to stop the customers entering the clubs in the early hour of the morning. By doing this they are able to reduce the chances of antisocial behaviour and crime incident in and around the
