In The Crucible and The Great Gatsby, Abigail Williams and Jay Gatsby, share similarities in the relentless pursuit of their desires and the use of manipulation, but differ in the morality and known implications of their actions. One similarity between the two characters is their relentless pursuit to achieve their goals. Abigail is driven by a desire to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor to attain the love of John Proctor to herself. To do so, she lies and falsely accuses many individuals, such as Elizabeth Proctor, in the Salem Witch Trials. Similarly, Gatsby is driven by a desire to win back his former love, Daisy. He makes every effort that he can to achieve his goal, for example, throwing extravagant parties and amassing a fortune through illegal means. Gatsby is determined, and he won't give up on making attempts to win her back despite the rift in social status between them. This is evident, when she puts on an act of seeing a yellow bird from Mary Warren’s spirit, immediately putting Warren in suspicion. In a similar sense, Gatsby manipulates the people around him by creating a persona that does not reflect his true personality. For instance, he presents himself as an ultra-wealthy individual through his extravagant house, parties, and car, all to impress Daisy.
