Sasha Romanski Ms. Masoodi/Ms. Petrelli English 1 Honors 14 April 2023 KR Literary Analysis Amir earns redemption in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner when shows great determination and bravery when going to rescue his nephew. The novel is about a boy named Amir who lives in Kabul with his wealthy father. One of their servants, Hassan, is Amir’s age and they spend every day together. Then, Amir doesn’t help Hassan in a time of need and feels so guilty about it that he gets Hassan to quit so he doesn’t have to deal with it anymore. Much later in life, Amir is asked to rescue Hassan’s son and bring him to a better home, his chance to finally redeem himself. Amir earns redemption when he travels to rescue Sohrab, Hassan’s son, from Kabul. At first, when Rahim Khan, his father’s best friend, tells Amir of the task at hand, Amir is scared. He does not feel ready to face his mistakes and this causes him to not want to go back at first. He says, “‘Rahim Khan, I don’t want to go back to Kabul. When Amir first went to get Sohrab, it was on the promise that there was a good home waiting for him at a Peshawar orphanage. After going to retrieve Sohrab, he knows he can not leave him in this war-torn country after all he had been through. The author writes, “Now, as the boy's pain soaked through my shirt, I saw that a kinship had taken root between us too. … I’d been looking for the right time, the right moment, to ask the question” (pg) Amir realizes that he and Sohrab had formed a bond, and that Amir can’t just go back to America and forget about it all. So, he decides not to send him back to an orphanage. Amir gives Sohrab a better life with guardians to care for him. This shows that Amir earns redemption because even though Amir could have left Sohrab at an orphanage in Afghanistan, he takes him home and gives Sohrab a good life, even if he didn’t do that for
