In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, two characters named Antony and Brutus gave speeches at Julius Caesar’s funeral. The two characters have been on opposite sides throughout the entire story. Antony was Caesar’s servant and would do anything for him. While Brutus was with the conspirators (the people who wanted to kill Caesar), but his reason to kill Caesar was just for the good of the people. Brutus offered to let Antony speak after him in the funeral, which led to Brutus being criticized and allowing the people to be persuaded by Antony. Even though Brutus had a great first speech and had the crowd on his side to begin with, but by allowing Antony go after Brutus let Antony get the final say and he used pathos and logos to win over the crowd. Logos was a strong way to persuade the people of Rome at the funeral of Julius Caesar. Antony and Brutus had a speech and Antony used logos a lot better than Brutus did. For example when Antony said “But Brutus says he was ambitious, And Brutus is an honorable man. He hath brought many captives home to Rome whose ransoms did the general coffers fill” (III.ii.85-88). Antony was that much better because he could listen to Brutus’s speech to know what to do during his own. He also used way more emotion and more logic when talking to the people. So after looking at pathos and logos it doesn’t even matter about who used ethos better. Antony’s speech was better, but this also shows that the city of Rome isn’t loyal after being on Brutus’s side and then going to Antony’s side.
