In Maria Viramontes’ Under the Feet of Jesus Estrella is a confused, angry girl who is attempting to figure everything out. Estrella is unable to figure anything out without the help of Perfecto Flores, but with his help she is able to create some understanding about the importance of education and becomes less angry. Viramontes uses tone and figurative language to help show Estrella’s growth and development. The beginning of the passage has an angry tone.

This passage is from the book Cinderella Ate My Daughter, by Peggy Orenstein. The overall purpose of this book is to inform the readers of the stereotypes girls must face as adolescents. The author is able to express her opinion as a parent and give advice to other parents with daughters of how to overcome the stereotypes so girls do not succumb to the girly culture that bombards the media. The book touches on Orenstein’s role as a mother to her daughter Daisy and the challenges she faces due to all the stereotypes for young girls. This passage focuses on girls conforming to the stereotype regarding pink is the color for females.

Dai Sijie is the Chinese author, who opposites side of the government of China during the Cultural Revolution, which is his childhood that he has to go to be re-educated by poor peasants. The setting of this book, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, is the re-education at that time, and the main characters of this book, Luo and Ma, are re-educated students like Sijie. He uses these literary elements to reveal political or social issues about the social class by the education difference, the area of living, and desire to read. In the Sijie’s book, the characters’ traits are used to explore the education difference because the villagers, who live in the Phoenix of Mountain, learn how they survive by farming and mining rather than reading and writing.
The book I read Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen. Woods Runner is historical fiction. At the beginning of the book it introduces a 13 year old named Samuel. Samuel was always in the woods hunting for food for his family.
She began to yearn for more knowledge. Her approach towards books also changes drastically which can be observed in the part where she was listening to Luo reading the book, and “the coat was resting on the flat of her hands, the way a sacred object lies in the palms of the pious.” This quote highlights the passion of the seamstress towards the words written on the coat. The novel Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a novel by Dai Sijie set during the Cultural Revolution in China which lasted from 1966 until 1976. Even though the author’s main focus is not opposing Mao’s rule, acts of oppression and the strict control practiced by the government can often be observed in the book. The author focuses on the process of re-education which includes sending urban youth to rural areas. Sijie depicts the mental and physical development of two boys who are being re-educated on the Phoenix Mountain of the Sky. The novel Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress challenges the concept of re-education and the aspects of the Chinese government by contrasting the Communist ideology to the dynamic character of the narrator, by using symbolism to complement the transformation of the major characters and by including the picaresque story of the Little Seamstress narrated by herself.
Lantin, in this story he has complicated emotional changes. In the beginning of the story, he truly loved his wife, we can see in the context that after his wife’s death, “Monsieur Lantin’s despair was so great that his hair became white in one month”, “time did not assuage his grief”. However, life is tough, he couldn’t bear it, finally “one evening, finding himself without a cent in his pocket”, therefore, “immediately the thought occurred to him of disposing of his wife’s paste jewels”. After he knew his wife had affairs, even though he was ashamed he sold all the jewels and ignored the clerks’ sneer. The way the narratives impact the characters and society in the two stories help them seek a new identity that could not be discovered without them. The novel “The Chinese Seamstress” is a great way to exemplify development of knowledge and character seen through two major characters, the narrator and the seamstress.
Meanwhile parts of Poland were absorbed into Germany. The rest of German occupied Poland was organised under a General Government. The Russian occupied parts of Poland were absorbed into the Soviet Union. The German-Soviet occupation of Russia meant terrible suffering for the Polish people.
The poet has shown how easily influenced children are and how they strive to be like their elders by using shoes as a representation and symbol for different lifestyles. “My little sister likes to try my shoes, to strut in them…” This line shows to the reader that this child not only admires, but idolizes her elder sister and is deciding to follow her behaviour and her choices. The fact that she not only likes to try on her elder sisters “shoes” but to also strut in them represents how the child wishes to draw attention to herself and is trying to seek the attention and approval of her elder sister. This shows that this young juvenile is easily influenced by even the most petty and minuscule choices and decisions that her sibling had made.
She likes the idea that Leon is an ambitious young man, who loves reading novels and talking about arts. Leon is even going to study in Paris, which has always been Emma’s dream that Charles has never been able to satisfy. While Emma uses Leon to imagine what her life without Charles would have been, Leon, who is physically attracted to her, uses banal romanticism to seduce her and to have a sexual affair. While Emma is fascinated by Leon’s romanticism, Flaubert looks at Leon as a person able to talk only of banal cliché.
