The sword that Beowulf uses to kill Grendel’s mother – where did he get it? What should the audience learn from this detail? Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother with a sword he finds on the wall of the cave. The sword is ‘an old sword made by giants, string of its edges, glory of warriors” (line -), bigger than any average sword and ornately decorated. Beowulf was not able to defeat Grendel’s mother with his sword however he is able to defeat her using the sword he found in the cave. The lesson found is this detail is Beowulf’s resourcefulness to find a sword to save his life. Instead of becoming demented and panicked in the moment, he looked for a way to overcome his circumstance.
