Around the 1900s in the South, Discrimination and prejudice were common acts that happened to the black and sometimes with the poor white as well. The word prejudice is the judgment of one person to another without any reasonable. It’s occurred because some people believed that they were more important than other and higher than others.Thus, the one being considered lower like black people were treated unfairly, had to use bathroom separate, and go to separate churches. Some people thought all black were automatically uneducated and dumb because they are black. Calpurnia was a black woman, who work for the Finches. Although the Finches treated her very friendly, but that didn’t mean she was equal to them. For example, when she is talking to Jem she had to add titles along with his name, “ Hush your mouth,sir ! When you oughta be hangin’ your head in shame you go along laughin- If Mr.Finch don’t wear you out, I will-get in that house, sir !” ( 278). This clearly show that Calpurnia is considered lower level than Jem because of her skin; even though Jem is younger than her, she addressed him with titles, which usually reserved for the noble or higher class. Another example is when Tom Robinson, a negro, is suspected to rape a white girl and being asked why did he scared and ran away if he didn’t, he declare,”.. I scared I’d be in the court…. Scared I’d hafta face up to what I didn’t do.”(265). If only Tom didn’t run away and got caught, he knows they will automatically convicted him guilty. Because he knows when a color person is being suspect a crime, then that person will be automatically guilty no matter what.
