There are many ways in which people all around you guide you through life. Life lessons can be taught in many ways. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout and Jem Finch are two children who had a very cold and stern father, Atticus Finch and the community around them influenced them and taught them many life lessons. The saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ is shown in many ways throughout the book. Another character who helps teach the children about life is Miss Maudie and Calpurnia. Calpurnia is the Finch family maid. She teaches the children their manners throughout the book. Calpurnia disciplines the children as if they are her own. This is shown when she sent Scout through the kitchen door with a stinging smack (pg.25). She also treats the children as if they are hers. She has helped raise them since they were little. She brings them to her church as if they were her family. She introduces the children to her church as “they’s my comp’ny” (pg.119). Scout and Jem view her as a motherly person who helps them in ways a mother should. Another key character in the book who helps raise Scout and Jem is Miss Maudie. Miss Maudie is a neighbour of the Finch family. Miss Maudie teaches them life lessons. An example is where she tells the children “ I forgot to tell you the other day that besides playing the Jew’s Harp, Attitcus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time” (pg.98). This is her teaching them to never underestimate their fathers age. Miss Maudie teaches Scout about sympathy to others when Scout is asking if Boo Radley is still alive and Miss Maudie states she knows hes alive and it’s a morbid subject. (pg 43).
