Ethnic Discrimination and the Call for Change
There are almost three thousand nations, 194 countries, 36 regions and three types of ethnicities in the world. They have different cultures, different customs, and different traditions. However, all human beings possess the right to be treated equally. In the mid 17th centuries, many Africans were shipped to North America as slaves. They were forced to do hard work for white people and were left to live in extreme poverty. What’s more, they were considered as properties that could be sold to white elites. According to the book, Tom didn’t rape the girl, but only tried to help her since she was lonely. However, the girl’s father, who had beaten the girl himself, told the jury that Tom raped and beat the girl. Even after Tom’s lawyer, Atticus, pointed out the truth in the court, the jury still finds Tom guilty and sends him to prison. Then Tom attempted to escape from prison and was caught by a prison guard who then shot him seventeen times, not so much to prevent his escape as to kill him. After Tom’s death, Tom’s employer, Mr. Link, offered a job to Tom’s wife Helen and protected her on her way to work. But there were only a few people who showed pity and gave support. Other people just saw this as a very little thing and soon forgot it. On the other hand, the news that a black man was killed by a white police officer soon set off a crazy wave of marches calling for black rights and for the court to toughen the case against Derek Chauvin. This time not only were black out on the street and calling for equality, but many white people also joined the march. They held the sign which said, “I can’t breathe”, which was the word the black man George Floyd said before he died. Large numbers of whites no longer regard blacks as inferior animals. As time goes on, more and more people realize that all races are equal, and all have the right to live a free
