Why does Nick become very intrigued by Gatsby at the party? Nick is intrigued due to the fact that Gatsby is different than an average man in the town they are from. Nick observes that Gatsby stood alone at the party, without a single drink, watching all his guests interact with one another. “He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five time in life.” What Nick is describing is that Gatsby to him is like a person that is one of a kind and different compared to anyone else. He did this so that he can keep his eye on things going on with her and see if anything changes with their current relationship being only streets apart from one another.
