Divorce is undoubtedly one of the most shocking events a child can have. As they are in a process of development and change in psychological terms, the serious negative process that they will experience during the divorce will also be reflected in their future lives. Children whose parents are divorced also tend to have higher anxiety and stress levels, and more frequent depression. The situation of distress has inevitably influence on the children's academic performance. The two impacts of distress in divorce process on children's school success are diminished learning capacity and behavioural problems at school.

Thus, they will have difficulty in catching up with other students who are in intact families. Moreover, the academic performance will be low and these children may have to repeat a grade or class more frequently than other students in married families. Also, from the statistics, it can be seen that the distress of divorce process have a big effect on academic performance. Daniel Potter of the University of Virginia found that elementary school children who experience parental divorce immediately begin performing worse academically than their peers from intact families. This gap persists through elementary school. Furthermore, another study showed that children of divorced parents are also more likely to be held back a grade and have lower GPAs. Another effect of distress in divorce process is that if, at the time of divorce, adults prefer to live separately, they may have to change the environment and school where the child will grow. As a result result of moving away from the environment the child is accustomed to, the adaptation to the child's new environment and school will take time, and the child may experience intense losing sensations.
